Aisle 9

Aisle 9

Tugs away at wiry black hairs
underneath his jaw—clenched tight

Lifts his head up, uncomfortably
Thank God I know a thing or two about cards!
He chose a hilarious birthday card just fine
But, our bearded buddy isn’t so sure to win—
when choosing wines down Aisle 9

I think I’ve had that Montepulciano!
Probably best to grab a Rosé.
Don’t all girls love pink wines?
I wish I could just bring beer.

*By the way, the host is a sommelier.

Today, he refuses to play the game
and risk offending a dear friend

The bag he carries is a half-glass
He lays down his safe card
on a complicated table
The House wins again
on Isle 9

Flipping Cards

Flipping cards

Flipping cards,
Searching for answers
Could you tell me, please
Anything about me?

I have been waiting

For a freaking discovery
Perhaps I am just a fool
Who holds onto cards

A voice calls out and tells me
To hold back because I must
Have my own back tonight—

To head for the bed

I set down the cards
In their place in the drawer

Clarity can wait until after
I turn out the lights

Grandma Liz’s 90th Birthday

FullSizeRender.jpg
Assortment of cards and letters from Ed and Liz Seurkamp (the BEST grandparents).

Today is my Grandma Liz’s 90th Birthday. It seems like we were just celebrating my Grandpa Ed’s 90th and I still can’t believe he’s gone. We had a big celebration for Grandpa’s birthday, but I am sure Grandma is being well taken care of in Cincinnati.

I have saved every single card and many odds and ends my grandparents have sent me since I was old enough to think about saving something. In honor of Grandma Liz, I have photographed all the cards and letters from over the years and can hardly wait until I get to hug her and wish her a Happy Birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRANDMA LIZ!
